Gram's Christmas Walnut Cut Outs

These make the best dunk-able cookies ever. With the cookie cut backs going on around here these were saved and requested by Haillie. I love that one her favorites is also a favorite of mine. I made up the dough but promised Abby I would wait for her to get home from school before cutting them out. Funny considering she won't even give them a try. Heaven forbid if she were to eat a nut.
Ingredients
1 cup butter, softened
1 cup sugar
2 eggs
1/4 cup milk
2 tsp vanilla
1 tsp walnut extract
2 tsp baking powder
4 cups all purpose flour
1/4 cup walnuts, ground
Extra walnut halves
Icing
1/3 cup butter
3 cups 10x sugar
2 tbsp coffee, strong
1-1/2 tsp vanilla
1 tsp maple extract
Directions
Preheat oven to 350 ⁰F. Cream butter and sugar in large mixing bowl until well combined. Add egg, milk, vanilla and walnut extract; beat until fluffy. Stir together flour, baking soda and ground walnuts; gradually add to mixture, beating until blended. Roll dough out 1/4" thick and cut out shapes with cookie cutters. Place on ungreased baking sheet and put walnut piece in center. Bake until golden brown, don't over bake. Remove from cookie sheet to wire rack. Cool completely, then icing and sprinkle with colored sugar. Makes about 6 dozen cookies.
